Healthcare technology meets travel.

I have written this entry a few times. They say your blogs should be 1700 words for the algorithms to find you. Finding 1700 words to describe my origin story isn’t hard, it’s choosing the right ones that I struggle with.

How much do I share as the founder of a tech startup and who really has time to read it given the moment we find ourselves in. What do I have to add of value to this shared experience? How am I different?

There are so many aspects of our journey here that are meaningful to us. Events and characteristics of our being that are unique to us and have helped shape our perception of the world around us. They also affect how people perceive us. So here we go. I am going to attempt to provide some context, background, history, and the inspiration for creating Day Dream Technologies Inc., this will take some time to unpack. Most 41 year journeys do.

I’m Jason, the founder of Day Dream Technologies you can watch me awkwardly introduce myself on YouTube here. I live in Honolulu Hawai’i with my Husband of 23 years. We moved here in July of 2019 to create a beach concierge service that we believe can create amazing travel products while intelligently balancing demand on the environment. Inspired by our travels to Hawai’i over the years, we decided to create a company that would give back by sharing our years of experience caring for others through my software technology experience and Daryl’s clinical experience supporting the care of patients needing surgery as a Surgical Technologist; a skill he developed in the Air Force and skills that we have both refined over decades.

We would leverage our experience to create a business that would delete the complexity of creating enjoyable experiences with loved ones visiting Oahu. Our clients would simply reserve an experience and show up. Beach Day Hawai’i would pick the location, bring the gear, and connect our clients with talented locals with a story to share. We would launch this company on Saturday, February 2nd 2020 with the team blessing of our first delivery van, fully loaded and ready to create personal experiences for Oahu visitors and locals seeking a moment to relax.

I don’t know about you, but I never plan a vacation with the thought of spending time in Costco. Usually, the time set aside is super expensive with flights, hotels, and activities booked. Taking a few hours to collect multi-use gear for a single use purpose seemed a wasteful but necessary process to get what we wanted. We would pick up sunscreen, chairs, snorkel gear and snacks and set off to find a quiet place to enjoy our brake from intense, stressful full-time jobs far-far away.

Instead of becoming the project manager for your trip, we envisioned a service that would learn your preferences, dreams, and limits to offer personalized service that would shorten the distance between you and a restorative experience or vacation. Our concierge service would create choreographed experiences and itineraries that leverage local talent, sustainable supplies, and intelligent planning to help avoid crowds and allow us to spend more time in the moment with the people that matter most.

Instead of stressing about the details you are not equipped to manage in an unfamiliar land, our technology would sense the world and adapt travel to reduce friction and enable you to support the communities you visit. Instead of piecing together itineraries that require you to consider everyone's preferences, goals, and limits and leaves you to manage their expectations along the way. You can rely on our technology to create experiences that align with everyone’s needs, discretely.

There is an example of this in the world today, if visited under different circumstances, it still places people in an unfamiliar space under a high degree of stress simply for what it could mean for them. When you visit a hospital for care they use advanced technology to assess your immediate needs and then define a specific care pathway for you that starts before you even leave home and follows you long after recovery. It creates a detailed profile of your physical being and needs, to support a healthy outcome for you. It provides specialized people with the information they need to help you succeed and thrive. It also enables these health systems to understand how they relate to each other and monitors the outcome of their care over time with the goal of reducing waste, lowering cost, and improving outcomes. These systems are not perfect, but they establish a foundation that organizations can use to improve.

As we pivoted from our concierge business that was forced into hibernation, we focused on what existed today that could help us accomplish our goals. We looked at platforms like Fareharbor and many others that would need to be stitched together and would spend hundreds of dollars on before we would realize they weren’t worth it. They required too much time to maintain and often hours of study to optimize. Many of them simply did not understand how we like to work.

What makes our business unique is not our bookkeeping, marketing programs, or reservation software, it’s our people and the creative service products we design and deploy for our clients. Our innovation is in the experiences we can craft that are unique and personal for our clients. We were spending hours learning, developing, re-developing, testing, training, re-training, communicating, forecasting, and directing traffic. It’s a lot of time that our clients will never see and thus doesn’t create value.

So I took on the task of documenting in graphic detail what could solve our problem. What could reduce the amount of time we spent in the office and also increase the reward of providing amazing experiences to our clients.

Day Dream Technologies started as a daydream. A “what if” conversation based in reality. It adapts tested approaches to resource management, automation, and communication to enable people to do great things. It is a multi-sided platform whose sole mission is to help reduce stress, set accurate expectations, and adapt to our environment. Its “special sauce” is in how it engages with people and guides them. The language it uses, the timing, and the data it uses to make life easier. We developed Day Dream to learn your preferences, dreams, and limits over time. Instead of offering up ads for products you have already purchased we use your data to inform your intelligent digital travel assistant, local guide, and journal in one fun easy to use app called myJourney. It enhances your life in real-time by providing context for your adventures. Whether it is suggesting a great local experience for a friend’s birthday and managing the invites, or crafting a comprehensive home to home itinerary. It books them and guides you every step of the way so you can focus on what matters.

Day Dream supports three distinct but similar populations; consumers, businesses, and community members. Providing each with a mobile device experience that informs and guides them in real-time. Why three apps? These groups have three distinct needs we want to fully support without distraction.

The first app, myJourney is our consumer travel application. It is the one app you will use to plan, coordinate, and book both local and distant experiences. It greets you with personalized recommendations aware of your current location and calendar. It provides intelligent suggestions that help you meet your goals and sets expectations for what comes next. It does this through a fun interactive user experience that sets the stage for future and past experiences and trips.

The myJourney app simplifies planning as Day Dream’s cloud based technology evaluates each user’s preferences, goals, and limits and finds common ground. Its destinationAware™ technology will have a real-time view into popular destinations all over the world and can adapt travel plans to reduce our carbon footprint and increase the positive impacts travel can have on destinations. It does this by considering all of the data you do not have access to with current online travel agent and destination management systems that simply aggregate out-of-date information and play with pricing to drive sales up all while diverting billions of dollars annually from a destination’s economy for the privilege of overexposing their home and leading to the erosion of their environments.

To fully index a destinations offerings and keep them up-to-date we would need to create an accurate picture of who has something to sell. We would need to understand their offering, validate it, and define it. And we would need to help make that it consistent, safe, and easy to find. The challenge with implementing advanced technology to manage the complexity within destinations like Hawai’i is the skill gap within small businesses to design, deploy, and maintain it.

The skills necessary to install and support these systems do not thrive in remote destinations. This leaves places like Hawai’i with a skills gap that makes implementing and maintain these systems expensive and again contributes to funneling more money away from the local economy. Additionally, a destination’s culture or social norms may not prioritize technology and instead focus on more analog experiences that support their quality of life and values.

The goal is not to turn people into robots but to use technology to make our life easier and allow us more time to share moments with loved ones or share our stories with others.

We want to make it easy to provide innovative products that help people do great things. For destination-based businesses this means the creation of the myPassion app. A mobile app experience that automates the administrative and customer engagement work of deploying a service centric menu consistently while keeping crew on track and engaged. It provides a similar user experience to the myJourney app for experience seekers. It focuses on task orientated information and timing that help front-line crew members support clients with relevant information, products, and services right when they are looking for them.

The myPassion app provides Gig Seekers or Business Owners with superpowers, helping them collaborate with other businesses, adapt their menus, and optimize operating procedures in real-time to the environment all while respecting the user’s own preferences, goals, and limits.

A virtual coach that shares best-practices relevant to your business model, suggesting refinements to keep you ahead of the competition and fueling responsible growth that respects your crew and the resources you consume along the way.

I know, sounds like a lot. It is and it isn’t. As I mentioned, this has already been done. Millions of people experience this technology today when seeking healthcare. With Day Dream we are simply applying proven technology differently. Adapting a fraction of healthcare’s complex approach to technology to a similar problem destinations like Hawai’i face; confined-high-risk space and limited resources. Like healthcare we use technology to care for people by anticipating what they need. A trusted guide that supports us with accurate relevant information right when its needed.

Instead of spending hours planning your day you spend more time engaging your clients and developing innovative products that keeps them coming back again and again.

So now we know our traveler and we have a real-time picture of our destination's amazing offerings. We have rich high-definition media that describe a destinations offerings accurately via an fun mobile device experience. We have one more group we need to loop in, the most important group that keeps everyone safe, healthy, and inspired: destination communities.

Today many communities like Hawai’i create organizations that help market their offerings around the world. These Destination Management Organizations, like the Hawai’i Tourism Authority create policy and serve as an interface between the tourism economy and the local government and businesses. They typically deploy a Destination Management System to help them index their offerings and propagate information across the web, their portals are usually dense sites with links to resources intended to help consumer’s make informed decisions about their trip. Often these systems don’t fund themselves as they don’t directly process transactions like Online Travel Agents. Expedia for example can charge up to 25% on top of a experience price simply for inserting a business into a search result and allowing people to review them all the while funneling more money away from destinations and creating a biased rating system that fails to help consumers set accurate expectations for their journey.

SimpleView is an example of a Destination Management System, and you can learn more about how these systems work by reading ‘Destination management systems’ adoption and management model: proposal of a framework’, published in February 2020 by the Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce. It’s a super exciting 23 page research paper that picks apart our existing travel support systems and they walk away with 5 key challenges that we seek to address with Day Dream Technologies.

First, Destination Management Systems do not support themselves. They rely on public funds to create marketing programs that these systems help automate. They can cost millions a year and Hawai’i is working to strip their DMO of some responsibilities because of the challenges they struggle to meet with their SimpleView DMS. Prior to COVID the community felt HTA’s approach was leading to the over tourism of Hawai’i, with crowded beaches and environmental erosion from excessive traffic. They felt the approach did not address demand effectively and prioritized growth over sustainability.

Second, due to the skill gap we mentioned earlier, these DMS platforms create an ongoing support and maintenance problem that leads to these systems propagating inaccurate information to other aggregating systems and online travel agents. This means small businesses are spending time answering the same questions over and over again and destinations can’t catch up. Consumers are not getting what they need to intelligently plan low impact trips.

These systems don’t enable strong regional or local collaborations between destinations or even the businesses within them. Each destination creates their own ad-hoc communication solution to help them share information and these systems become fragmented and susceptible to knowledge gaps when careered crew members decide to retire or change direction. This lack of a secure omni-directional communication channel limits a destinations ability to react to consumer demand and environmental events in real-time. It creates inconsistency and effects outcomes for clients.

Many of these challenges compound and reinforce a biased, wasteful cycle that stifles innovation and drives up cost. Because these systems are expensive, inaccurate, and disjointed they cannot adapt quickly to new technology that could help them monitor and manage their resources better. They leave destinations like Hawai’i with massive blind spots for consumer preferences and are left managing the affects of an uninformed traveler stumbling around their home narrowly avoiding danger.

It is not sustainable.

Day Dream Technologies sees a need for a holistic approach that considers the needs of destination communities when developing travel products and services. To provide communities with an easy way to coordinate events, monitor their environments, and make informed decisions on growth. To help them we are creating the myHome app.

This pandemic is inspiring thousands of people to rethink these challenges and how we face them. There is no doubt that we will some day solve them. So why should we be the ones to do it? What makes us different?

We believe travel tomorrow should be a holistic experience. It should work for the benefit of all involved and it should create opportunities for experiences that inspire personal growth and appreciation for our world and the people we share it with.

What makes us different is built into our journey, our experience traveling and working from the perspective of the working class with an appreciation for technology that can make life easier. Inspired to create technology that fills the gaps we cannot see with supportive communication and guidance that helps us attain our dreams and respects our preferences and limits.

A connected solution that creates a clear unbiased environment where communities and small business can innovate and provide guests with immersive life changing experiences consistently and safely.

By automating what we politicize we can create trust and restore balance. We can learn what makes us great and refine it. We can create opportunity for everyone who seeks it and change how we travel and work tomorrow.
